Open Enrollment Period OEP

MEDICARE: If you didn’t switch, you still can. If you did switch and are not happy with that decision you can still change it. Last chance for this year!

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is an annual period during which Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their Medicare Advantage (Part C) or prescription drug (Part D) plans. Here’s what typically happens during OEP:

Dates

  • January 1 to March 31: This period allows Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan to:
  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Return to Original Medicare and, if desired, join a standalone Medicare Part D plan.

Key Points

  1. Who Can Use the OEP?
  • Beneficiaries already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan as of January 1.
  • You cannot use this period to switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time.
  1. Changes Allowed:
  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another (with or without drug coverage).
  • Drop Medicare Advantage to return to Original Medicare, with the option to add Part D.
  1. Changes Not Allowed:
  • Switching Part D prescription drug plans if you’re enrolled in Original Medicare.

Other Enrollment Periods:

  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 to December 7 for broader changes.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): For qualifying life events like moving or losing other coverage.
