There. I said it.
A few weeks ago, I was at the NAIPC Long Island Summer Party when one of my clients walked up to me and jokingly said:
“Your health insurance sucks.”
He was busting my chops, but I’m going to tell you something: it bothered me.
I take what I do very personally. My team and I work incredibly hard for our clients. We are selective about the carriers and plans we represent, and I never want to put someone into something I wouldn’t recommend to my own family.
So the next day, I showed up at his office with coffee and bagels.
I told him, “I have to be honest. What you said yesterday bothered me a little.”
He looked at me like I had three heads. He barely remembered saying it!
He told me, “James, I was kidding! You saved us tens of thousands of dollars. You explained exactly how the plan worked. Higher deductible, lower premium. Lower deductible, higher premium. We made the decision. I’m happy. I was just busting your chops.”
We laughed about it.
But then I started thinking…
You know what? Health insurance DOES suck sometimes.
I question our healthcare system every single day, and I question the health insurance industry every single day.
But the insurance companies aren’t always the only problem.
We are seeing more and more issues involving provider billing, incorrect codes, missing prior authorizations and claims that are rejected because something wasn’t submitted properly.
Then what happens?
The patient gets the bill.
And unfortunately, many people simply pay it because they assume they owe it.
DON’T DO THAT!
Question the bill. Call the provider. Call the insurance company. Find out why it wasn’t paid before you pull out your credit card.
And if you’re a Safe Haven client?
Call us.
We do this for you.
My team and I advocate for our clients every day. We make the phone calls. We ask the questions. We help figure out what went wrong and what needs to happen next.
We can’t fix the entire healthcare system.
But at Safe Haven, we can help make health insurance suck a little less.
And we’re pretty damn proud of that.
